Conservation Status: Not of concern

Gyromitra melaleucoides has a broad shallow cup-shaped “cap” which may become irregular in age but is not strongly lobed. The color of the interior surface of the cup is light- to dark brown, and the exterior is light brown to whitish, without prominent ribs, although it can be broadly folded. The brownish to whitish stipe has blunt ridges and is short to rudimentary. G. melaleucoides is known from northern California north to B.C. and east to Colorado on or near rotting conifer wood. Because of its overall shape, it could be confused with discinas, but the latter have, at most, a rudimentary stipe and much shorter spores (10--14 vs. 25--35 µm).
